Classic black tie is never wrong for a swanky New Year's Eve affair. When it comes to a classic tuxedo; black with  a medium width lapel, two button jacket with flat front slacks will never be dated  Make sure the bow tie is a self tying one. The imperfection of the self tied bow tie is a sign of a true fashion connoisseur. I tend to favor antique cuff-links, preferably with gems or pearls, black pearl would be my number one choice. When it comes to the pocket square, a color or pattern fabric can be the perfect touch of individuality. Photo Source: knowthedetails

Reinterpreting the formal look and doing it on a budget may be the best option for this New Year's eve event. You don't have to be boring or even traditional when it comes to dinner jackets. Be daring. Go white with your dinner jacket choice and pair it with black slacks and shirt, no tie - especially for those of you on the West Coast. This is the sort of look that shopping the vintage shops may allow for some amazing and very reasonably priced options. Welcome the New Year in your own style and have fun doing it. Not all New Year's eve parties are formal or even require you to wear a suit and tie, however in case you feel like stepping it up a notch without dressing up all the way, here's a great alternative. Turtle neck sweater and sport coat. Make sure the turtle neck sweater is trim and not a bulky one when pairing it with a sport coat. Feel free to play with color combinations always remembering to look in the mirror before leaving he house to make sure it all works. I'm suggesting you don't tuck the turtle neck especially to those guys without six pack abs which is about 90% of us. This ensemble can be most flattering to those less than perfect bodies. Chances are you got big plans for the weekend and want to look great as you welcome 2012. Not all invitations for New Year's celebrations are black tie formal affairs. Here is an option for that other type of party. A slim suit - also known as the lady-killer suit -  in a  vibrant color will always make a smashing impression especially when paired with a crisp white dress shirt and dark tie. Look sharp, elegant and sexy as you say goodbye to 2011. Oh and for this occasion, let's go with a sleek black lace up dress shoe. Photo Source: jacobmrivedal

Could anyone argue that this bombastic foursome were indeed the kings of style for the 20th century? That still today, way into the 21st century; their fashion choices from back in the day, can still be seen all over the runways season after season? Everything the Rat Pack is wearing in this photo from the 60's - except for Joey Bishop's slacks -  is exactly what is still on trend today. Style is forever and cool is never out of fashion. The exuberant power of red. Clearly most effective during the holiday season but not to be disregarded the rest of fall and winter. Red is a great accent color for accessories like scarves, ties, bow-ties and pocket squares. And so for today - Christmas eve 2011 - I suggest wearing something red  to celebrate the day. Whether surrounded by loved ones or just having a quiet evening by yourself, a red scarf will most certainly get you in a festive mood . Merry Christmas to you all!

Grey, white and burgundy are colors that go well together all the time, but to me they are especially appropriate during the holiday season. A v-neck sweater with a shirt and tie can take you from day to night and look chic without a second thought, then if you add a black and white gingham sport coat to the mix, you are truly in a league of your own and most likely to be the talk of the party. Oh, and don't forget a white pocket square as your final touch of class! Photo Source landerurquijo

Much eating and drinking with a little bit of gift giving and a smidgen of cheer, is what the holidays are all about for most. Chances are your stomach will expand somewhat during this joyful time so; the perfect pant for this season is the waist adjuster pant. This belt-less slack will give you the option to adjust the waist band to accommodate your size. Eat, drink, be merry and keep your pants on this holiday season! Photo Source: landerurquijo

Cargo pants seem to have a life of their own or at least re-incarnate over and over again. They are practical and truly comfortable. A cargo pant in corduroy is perfect for the cooler months. Also find one that is trim and the pockets are not protruding out so as to avoid unnecessary bulk, especially with a fabric like corduroy. And yes you can wear a sport coat with cargo pants, it makes for a fun dressier casual option. Photo Source: whataqueerbird

The classic double monk strap shoe has very little competition when it comes to premiere elegance. The monk shoe comes in single and double strap. The double strap with a more square expression on the toe box is usually best suited for suits, however it can be paired with jeans and chinos as well for a more casual European look. Always in fashion and a sign of good taste for the men who wear them. Photo Source: forwardfitting

Salt and Pepper to celebrate maturity. There's an existing stigma to getting older and, heaven forbid; showing your age. Remove facial lines and most definitely dye you hair. I say screw all that nonsense. Arriving at that place in time when your hair turns gray can actually improve your look. Salt and pepper hair does not diminish beauty and style; quite the opposite. Take pride in your salty locks. Photo Source: unclebeebo

The academic/professorial look is strongly on trend this season which usually consists of tweed jackets, vests and bow-ties, however, the letterman jacket is also making some noise on the streets this winter. Though usually associated with a younger student look, it is easy to dress up a letterman jacket for a more adult expression. As always the key is not what you wear but how you wear it that creates the perfect look for you. Photo Source: knowthedetails

Has the bow tie replaced the straight tie? Not entirely but it sure is trending strong. The bow tie is no longer synonymous with formal wear. It can be the perfect add on to that plaid shirt and old pair of jeans or maybe even enhance your holiday sweater ensemble. Whatever the occasion you can't go wrong with bow tie. I love all things cashmere including gloves. However when it comes to practicality, you are better off wearing leather gloves. Cashmere gloves tend to come apart at the seams easily and/or wear off quickly around the knuckles and thumb areas, where leather is much more resistant. I still suggest you have one pair of cashmere gloves for those moments when you are not caught up in the hustle of big city living and just need to keep your hands warm on a cool winter's night. Today in Australia! Good to know that summer is around the corner. It is however a really long block. Long hair in trend for next summer as is the shorter shorts and chukas which never seem to go out of style regardless of the seasons! Hang in there it will be warm before you know it!

How important is the lining in your coat? Not at all if you're not a detail oriented man. However it is a defining factor to those who value and understand dressing well. Some details - like lining - are only known to the man wearing the garment and this is key in the way a garment makes you feel. After all how a man looks will absolutely influence the way he feels!

Wearing the right amount of cologne can be the defining touch in a well dressed man. A whole article can be written about this and I will - look for Vincent'sPov in January - but for now here are some quick tips. Find the right scent for your body chemistry. Never splash cologne on your face or anywhere. Use one or two quick spritz only. Choose two out of these areas to spritz. 1.Below the Adam's apple.
2. Where the forehead meets the hairline. 3. On the back side of your hands. 4. The back of your neck or 5. Behind your ears. Remember never more than two quick spritz!

If you are a guy who is just beginning to put together your basic wardrobe, this is not for you. This is for the man who has a diverse variety in his closet. The sport coat with the removable front liner. Though aesthetically pleasing - trust me I have put this coat in many guys this season and it always looks amazing - it does not truly serve any purpose. I tend to prefer clothes and accessories that make sense beyond the aesthetic use but this is one exception I can stand behind.

Some pieces are timeless and always in fashion. The Biker Jacket is one of those pieces that can stand the test of time and defy trends. Made popular by Marlon Brando and James Dean, the Biker Jacket has been synonymous with the bad boy look for decades. Still hot today the Biker Jacket is one of those pieces worth investing in since it will never go out of style.

I was asked recently when is it appropriate to not wear a belt? The short answer is, whenever you are wearing pants without belt loops on the waist band. However there are exceptions. If you are wearing suspenders you may forgo the belt - although they serve two different functions. You may feel very comfortable and relaxed in your old chinos or jeans strolling on the beach on a beautiful morning with an oversize sweater, topsiders, maybe a baseball cap and a cup of coffee, dog by your side and be just fine without a belt also.

Socks 101. The optimal combination: 80 percent cotton for softness and absorption, 20 percent nylon for stretch. Life expectancy for a sock is about a year, roughly. Average price for good socks about $30 - except cashmere socks! White socks are never dress socks.

Time to break out the leather gloves. During the colder months, gloves are as important as the undershirt. With the undershirt it is that first of layer that helps the rest of your body stay warm. With leather gloves, keeping your hands warm will trick the rest of your body into thinking is warm all over. Also if you use an non-oily hand cream prior to putting on your leather gloves, your skin will stay moisturized much like a mini manicure finish.
